Mahakali River — the lifeline on the western border

Western Kanchanpur

The Mahakali (Sharda) River forms the western boundary of the district and of Nepal itself. Its broad banks and seasonal crossings are part of daily life for border communities.

The riverside offers wide Terai vistas and is a popular spot for evening walks. During the monsoon the river swells quickly — always follow local flood advisories before visiting the banks.

Highlights

  • Forms Nepal's western international border
  • Wide Terai river landscapes and sunsets
  • Important for irrigation and local livelihoods
